How & When Can I Stain

  • Do not thin Wood Shield Stains.
  • Do not stain if rain is forecasted in the next 24 hours.
  • Do not stain on a windy day as it will reduce the stain's penetration.
  • Do stain on a warm (>10°C for 24 hours) not hot (<27°C) afternoon (4 hours after the dew) when there has been no rain for the previous 24 hours.
  • Only Wood Shield Best 100% Acrylic & Wood Shield Best Acrylic/Alkyd Stain can be applied in the morning 1 hour after the dew.
  • Do follow the sun, work in the shade or stain on an overcast day to provide lots of time for the stain to penetrate into the wood.
  • Do use a moisture meter to ensure wood moisture content is acceptable for staining.
  • Do use a good quality brush from Home Hardware for best results. If spraying or rolling, back brush over the wet stain to aid penetration into the wood.
  • Do apply the stain continuously to the length of the board to prevent lap marks from occurring, especially when using a semi-transparent stain.
  • Do stain all 6 sides of the boards, if possible.
