Lloydminster, AB, November 28 - Home Hardware Building Centre - Lloydminster has been chosen to be profiled in a 90-second television feature that will air across Canada on November 30 on CTV's National News and December 7 during CTV's Canada AM as part of Home Hardware's Home Town Stories series profiling the many ways that local Home Hardware Dealers get involved with their communities.
The feature tells the story of Home Hardware Building Centre - Lloydminster's Lady Bug Ball this past spring. The store, owned and operated by the Rurka family, houses a sizeable garden centre which was besieged by aphids. Unable to spray the bugs in Alberta, the store researched a better way to look after their local garden plants. Upon learning that lady bugs eat aphids, they began releasing lady bugs into their garden center and embarked on an education campaign to help customers defeat the aphids in their home gardens.
As questions and interest peaked, they hosted the Lady Bug Ball - a garden party held after business hours featuring an ice cream stand and a petting zoo for the kids. Guests dressed in black and red received a free perennial and kids were given bug candy. At the height of the party, staff dressed as lady bugs released 35,000 lady bugs into the garden centre to the delight of hundreds of guests.
"This event was a real labour of love for our staff," said Sarah Rurka, Dealer-Owner, Home Hardware Building Centre - Lloydminster. "Not only were we able to educate our customers about this natural solution to their pest problem, but we brought the community together and had a lot of fun."
Home Hardware Stores Limited has been a community-based business since its inception in 1964, one that encourages its Dealers and staff to build meaningful, long-term relationships with the neighbourhoods they serve. In communities across Canada Home Dealers work hard to ensure that they are making a difference; donating to local charities and initiatives, sponsoring local teams, participating on community councils and volunteering for community clean-up and beautification projects and many other local projects.
The story was selected as one of 20 finalists and a film crew visited the community this summer. The clip can also be viewed online at www.myhometownstory.ca.
