Home Hardware's fleet of 132 power units and almost 500 trailers travel across Canada delivering product to more than 1,080 Home Hardware Dealers and covering approximately 17 million kilometres a year. The fleet is based in the company's four distribution centres in St. Jacobs and Elmira, Ontario, Debert, Nova Scotia and Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
"Everyday our big yellow trucks travel almost 50,000 kilometres on Canada's highways visiting communities from coast to coast and that's why the same quality and care that goes into our products also goes into our truck fleet," said Paul Straus, President and CEO, Home Hardware Stores Limited. "The team who manages, maintains and drives our fleet is highly skilled and is a point of pride here at Home. They consistently demonstrate their ability to serve our Dealers at the highest level while making sure that safety remains a priority."
Home Hardware is a leader in the trucking industry, developing road safety policies for the hiring, orientation and training of drivers. The company was one of the first fleets to adopt a Carrier Safety Management System developed in conjunction with CSA. Technology such as on-board recorders are able to monitor each driver's safety and efficiency performance and drivers with high performance records receive bonuses.
The Private Fleet Safety Awards program was created in 1998 by Zurich and the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada. The awards program recognizes private truck fleets that are most dedicated to safety improvement, particularly when they exceed National Safety Code requirements. The aim of the awards program is to encourage improved road safety for the general public while promoting best practices in safety management for private fleets. Judging is conducted by an independent panel and follows an established criterion that focuses on the company's overall safety regime and its record on the road.
