Double Take

Part of the joy of preserving is sharing the homemade goodness with friends and family. Present your culinary work-of-art in this twin tote, worthy of the gifts within!

The following caddy instructions accommodate two 500 mL jars. You can also adjust the size to fit your style and/or size of jars. The instructions would remain the same, with the exception of dimension changes.

Materials:

  • corner brackets (10) 2379-054
  • 3/16" steel rod 2192-121
  • 1" x 4" pine (3 feet)
  • #10 3/4" screws (12) 2166-676
  • carpenters glue 2020-182 2020-182

Here's How!

  1. Cut wood parts from pine in the following lengths:
    • 2 sides and 1 bottom = 3 pieces at 9" length
    • 1 divider and 2 ends = 3 pieces at 2 3/4" length
  2. Glue 2 long sides on bottom. Glue ends and centre divider on top of bottom and between long sides.
  3. Clamp and leave to cure.
  4. Sand to smooth edges and install corner brackets.
  5. Install centre bracket with 1 screw through the top, then drill a 3/16" pilot hole through the side to receive the handle.
  6. Bend the handle in a vice, pulling moderately while tapping with a hammer. This will produce a sharp tight corner. Work from one end to the other 1" then 5" side 5" top 5" side and cut off to leave a 1" return. Ensure the corners are straight and 90 degree angles.
  7. Spread handle open just enough to insert the ends into the holes.
