Installing a New Showerhead Installing a New Showerhead Installing a New Showerhead

When working with bright finished pipes, such as shower arms, care must be taken not to scratch the finish. Before gripping chromed fittings with wrenches or pliers, wrap them with tape or rags to prevent them from being marked.

  1. Removing And Replacing A Showerhead
Protect and grip the shower arm with a wrench or pliers then unscrew the showerhead using a second wrench or pliers. When replacing the head make sure to use Teflon tape on the threads of the shower arm. Do not over tighten.
  2. Removing And Replacing A Shower Arm
The shower arm is threaded on both ends. Unscrew the arm from the fitting that is hidden in the tub wall. Moderate force may be necessary initially, so take care not to slip and damage the tub wall. When replacing the shower arm, wrap the threads with Teflon tape.
  3. To install a hand shower using a diverter valve, remove the showerhead, install the valve to the arm and re-attach the showerhead. Attach the hose fitting of the hand shower to the connection on the side of the diverter valve. Use Teflon tape on all threaded connections.
  4. In hard water areas, lime scale builds up on the surface of the showerhead in rough white patches. It also clogs the water jet holes, reducing the shower to a trickle. The scale can be removed by soaking the showerhead in Calcium Lime & Rust Remover (4526-276) until the deposits are dissolved.

Did You Know?

Teflon tape is the easiest way to seal threaded joints in iron, brass and plastic plumbing fittings. A roll of this handy 1/2 inch wide tape should be in every toolbox. Apply the tape to the male half of the joint starting about 1/8 inch from the end being careful not to get tape over the end of the fitting. Wrap the tape clock-wise around the male threads of the fitting. When the tape is wrapped the wrong way around the fitting, it becomes unwound as the joint is tightened. Wrap several turns of tape around the fitting tightly enough for the tape to embed itself into the thread then break the tape. Gently tighten the fittings together with a wrench for a good seal.
