More than 60 years ago in St. Jacobs, Ontario, Walter J. Hachborn and Henry Sittler laid the groundwork for what would become Canada’s largest Dealer-owned and operated home improvement retailer.
In 1964, 128 independent Ontario hardware retailers purchased Hollinger Hardware Limited of St. Jacobs, Ontario. This resulted in the formation of a 100% Dealer-owned business model, an answer to the challenge posed by "big box" retailers who benefitted from direct-from-manufacturer buying power. Together, Home Dealers could be confident in the future of their business with their expanded advertising, shared buying power and comprehensive inventory and delivery.
In 1980, Home Hardware Stores Limited opened the BeautiTone paint facility. Headquartered in Burford, Ontario, the BeautiTone and Home Products Division is one of the most modern paint manufacturing facilities in North America. As the #1 Canadian-owned and Canadian-made retail paint brand, BeautiTone is exclusively sold at Home Hardware, Home Building Centre, and Home Hardware Building Centre stores across Canada. BeautiTone produces top-quality paint and home products made available in its Designer, Pure, Signature, Wood-Shield, and PRO series.
In 1999, Home Hardware purchased Beaver Lumber. Beaver Homes & Cottages is a service available at more than 500 Home locations that assists customers through the process of building their dream home or cottage from concept to construction to completion. Designs range from 300+ square foot cottages to 4,000+ square foot estate homes with each design being fully customizable through Home Hardware’s Architectural Solutions Group.
Today, Home Hardware Stores Limited has Distribution Centres located in St. Jacobs, Elmira, Wetaskiwin and Debert servicing more than 1,000 stores operating under the Home Hardware, Home Building Centre, Home Hardware Building Centre and Home Furniture banners. The Home Hardware Dealer network continues to improve life at home by providing superior home improvement retail experiences characterized by helpful advice and a deep understanding of their communities.
