Here’s How to Reno Your Bathroom on a Budget

Avid DIYer Addy Gray had been slowly updating her 1990s home room by room, but the main bathroom was a space she dreaded taking on. In addition to being dated, it had bone-coloured fixtures, an old chipped vanity, and a peel-and-stick countertop that had long since come unglued. The fixtures were also loud and rickety, and there was just no space to store her boys’ bathroom amenities. This bathroom needed a complete reno. Follow along below and see how Addy did it with the help of her local Home Hardware. To see the full assortment of products used, choose a Home Hardware Building Centre or Home Building Centre.

I didn't want to change the footprint of the space, as I am more of a weekend DIY kind of gal. I also wanted this project to be something I could accomplish easily within my skill set. Before diving in, I created a mood board with all my dream bathroom items I found at my local Home Hardware. I was able to pick out a vanity, faucets, toilet, paint colours and even the accessories to completely transform the bathroom space.

1. Vanity with Storage

I started the reno by removing the old vanity and already I could see how it would all come together. Priority one for the new vanity was storage, and this one has a lot: three drawers down the middle and two large flanking cabinets. There’s even an open storage area underneath which is great for towels. For the new faucet I decided to get away from chrome and go with an upscale matte black finish.

2. Upgrading the Toilet

For the new toilet I went with an elongated vs. round bowl. There’s enough space and it works well with our décor. I think the slow-close seat adds a touch of class too. This install was pretty easy too as everything required came in the package.

3. Warm, Homey Walls

I was waffling between board and batten, vertical shiplap, or maybe even a beadboard to add some interest to the walls. In the end I used 1/8” plywood door skins ripped down into 4-inch strips to create a vertical half wall around the entire room. It really gave the bathroom a warm, cottage-like feel.

4. Fresh Paint

Next up was the paint. I wanted a soft cottage green (not blue! not purple!) and Sprout by BeautiTone was the perfect creamy vintage colour for the walls. For the upper portion I went with a bright white, White Shoulders by BeautiTone because the room has very little light and it really made an impact against the green and natural woods.

5. New Accent Pieces

Now for my favourite part—the styling! The Home Hardware line of InStyle Bathroom Décor Products has a huge selection to fit any style of bathroom. I chose a tasteful, textured shower curtain and a beautiful braided bath mat to warm up my feet after getting out of the bath.

The whole process was quick, cost-effective, and really got my creative juices flowing. The new bathroom suits our home so much better. Now I have space for the boys’ bathroom items, a properly functioning bath and shower, and a toilet that doesn't shake the house when flushed. I’m so happy with the end result!
