Few things will end an outdoor party faster than the presence of wasps. Ever-curious and armed with a potent stinger, human activity can incite wasps to attack. One sting is painful; multiple stings can result in an allergic reaction and may require urgent medical attention. Wasps do play a valuable role in controlling other insect pests, which is helpful if you have a garden, berry bushes, or fruit trees. Here’s some practical and effective wasp repellents to keep them out of your yard, or at least away from your outdoor living spaces.

Types of Wasps

“Wasp” is often used as a catch-all name for different stinging insects with similar features. One unique characteristic of wasps is that unlike bees they can sting multiple times. Identifying the type of wasp is the first step toward finding an effective wasp deterrent. Size, markings and habitat distinguish the following types of wasps:

How to Keep Wasps Away

Wasps are most likely to show up at mealtime when you’re dining al fresco on the deck or patio. They tend to be most active (and aggressive) in late summer and fall when they’re feeding larvae and constantly on the hunt. Take these basic steps to avoid attracting their attention.

Should You Remove a Wasp Nest?

Not every wasp nest requires immediate attention. Nests located in remote corners of large properties may not become a nuisance. Unless the nest and resulting insect traffic is uncomfortably close to a busy entrance or window it may be best to leave it be. If you decide to remove the nest yourself, be sure to wear a head net, thick gloves, and other protective clothing. Schedule your mission before sun-up or after sundown when the wasps are least active.

Wasps are single-minded creatures that attack only in defence. With that in mind, the steps we’ve outlined should discourage them from nesting and help reduce the risk of getting stung. If you do have to remove a nest, make sure you can do it safely or consult a qualified expert.
