Nothing intrudes more on your beautiful home décor than unsightly wires and cables. They can also pose a tripping hazard and present a danger to small children. Fortunately, there are many DIY cord management solutions available. Here’s how to use them in different areas of your home.

#1 How to Hide Cables with Cord Covers

Your entertainment centre is usually the area with the most wires and cables in your home, but this solution can work on any wall. Cord concealers come in straight lengths, but you can also get corner pieces, t-fittings and end caps to bend and hide your wires . Here’s how to hide wires that connect to your TV, cable box, stereo, gaming system, and other audio-visual accessories:

  1.  Measure the wall to determine the length of the cables and cord cover you’ll need.

  2.  Use a utility knife to cut the cord cover to size.

  3.  Mark out where your cord cover will attach to the wall with a pencil and level to ensure straight placement.

  4.  Mount the base of the cord cover to the wall using the adhesive backing or anchors and screws (most types come with pre-drilled holes).

  5.  Slide the wires into the base and snap the cover on to conceal them.

  6.  Option: you can also paint the wire cover the same colour as the wall to conceal it even more.

#2 How to Hide Wires in Your Baseboards

Your coaxial TV cables are often just stapled to your baseboards by your cable installer. They may not pose a tripping hazard but they’re unsightly to say the least. The cables are easily hidden with a baseboard cord protector. These self-adhesive cord channels are impact-resistant and feature a hollowed-out section to run the cord through. The quarter-round design makes for a neat, tight fit against your baseboard.

#3 How to Hide Cords in Crown Moulding

Sometimes running wires along a wall or baseboard isn’t possible. One option is to use the crown moulding where your walls meet the ceiling. Your existing crown moulding may have a recessed channel on the back that is large enough to run wires through. Alternatively, you can run thin cord covers or baseboard cord protectors along your crown moulding. The visual impact is minimal, and you can paint covers to match the room.

#4 How to Hide Wires on a Wall

This solution works great if you have a wall-mounted TV with cables dangling down in clear view. It does require cutting into your drywall, but the holes will be neatly hidden behind cable covers. Here’s how to hide wires in a wall:

  1.  Disconnect all your TV cables and remove your TV from the wall (or simply pull your TV out if it has an adjustable arm).

  2.  Use a stud finder to find a stud-free section of the wall behind your TV.

  3.  Cut two holes: one behind the TV where the cables come out, and one directly below near an outlet. You can cut your holes with a variety of tools including a utility knife, jab saw, reciprocating saw, or oscillating tool

  4. Just make sure your holes match the size of your cable plates. Attach a pass-through cable plate over the upper hole and screw it into the drywall.

  5.  Feed the TV cords into the upper cable cover until they drop down low enough to grab and pull through the lower hole.

  6.  Slip your TV cords through another cable plate and attach the plate to the wall.

  7.  Plug all your cables back in and admire your new, clean TV setup.
