Bare Wall to Drywall

Step 1: A Clean, Clear Space

This is your starting point, whether you’re beginning with a new home or renovating a house you’ve been living in for years. Next, decide how you will use the space – in-law suite, games room, workout space, kid zone. Before you press go on any work, however, consult your local government to determine what building permits are required, and line up any professionals you will need for the job such as electricians and plumbers.
Step 2: Rigid Foam Insulation Board
Step 3: Subflooring

Step 2: Rigid Foam Insulation Board

Apply sheets of rigid foam to the concrete walls and seal the joints; this provides insulation but also acts as a moisture barrier. (Follow local building code requirements for specific product and installation requirements.)

Step 3: Subflooring

Install subfloor panels next as lumber for stud walls cannot be placed directly against concrete. This is an important waterproofing step that will also provide warmth and comfort to your finished basement.
Step 4: Stud Wall Framing
Step 5: Electrical and Plumbing

Step 4: Stud Wall Framing

With subfloor in place, stud walls can now be built and installed. Once studs are in place, be sure to use a level to ensure your walls are straight and your studs are flush.

Step 5: Electrical and Plumbing

Electrical and plumbing can now be installed into your basement’s stud wall framing, from rough-ins for your laundry room and spa bathroom to the electrical for that new movie-viewing room you’ve always wanted.
Step 6: Insulation and Vapour Barrier
Step 7: Drywall

Step 6: Insulation and Vapour Barrier

Installation of insulation and vapour barrier can now begin. This is a crucial step in improving your home’s energy efficiency. Use sheathing tape to cover and seal any draft gaps in the installed vapour barrier.

Step 7: Drywall

Start with the ceiling, and enlist a friend to help. Ensure that the ends of the sheets fall at the centre of a joist or stud. Once the ceiling is covered, move to the walls. With drywall up, taping, mudding and sanding follow. Pro tip: Hang plastic drop-cloths in all doorways to reduce dust from entering other areas of the house.
