Floating Tabletop in Breakfast Nook

Here’s How

  1. Using a stud sensor, locate and mark the stud you want to centre the table on.
  2. Locate and mark the studs to the left and right of the centre stud.
  3. Trace a rectangle from the centre of the left stud to the centre of the right, about 12” in height.
  4. Cut the rectangular piece of drywall out using the utility knife and drywall saw to expose the inside of the wall.
  5. Cut two equal pieces of 2” x 4”, roughly two-thirds the length of your countertop. For example, if you’re using the full length of the 72” countertop, each piece should be 48” long.
  6. On one end of each piece, measure in 3.5” and mark a line down creating a square. Drill 4 pilot holes 3/4” in from each corner of one piece and another 4 pilot holes 1-1/2” in from the other piece.
  7. Place one of the pieces of lumber to the right of the centre stud, at your desired height, and sink one screw. Level the length of lumber and sink the remaining 3 screws.
  8. Place the second piece of lumber to the left of the centre stud and repeat the step above, also checking level across the two pieces.
  9. Sit the countertop on the lumber to make sure it’s both level and at a comfortable height, then remove for the next step.
  10. Take the piece of drywall you previously removed and measure and mark the location of where the two pieces of 2” x 4” will go through.
  11. Using the drywall saw, cut out the two rectangles.
  12. Slide the piece of drywall over the ends of the lumber, affix in place with drywall screws and patch up with drywall compound.
  13. Reposition the countertop where you want it.
  14. Drill 3 pilot holes up from underneath each piece of lumber, one near the wall, another near its end and the last in between the two.
  15. Sink screws upwards to attach the countertop to the supports, making sure not to over-drill and break the top surface.

Shiplap Ceiling and Pendant Light

3. When installing shiplap on finished ceilings, install 1” x 2” battens and fasten them directly to the framing with 21/2” screws for a solid nailing surface.

Also, the battens will somewhat flatten out uneven ceilings and you can run them either parallel or perpendicular to the ceiling framing, depending on which way you want the shiplap to run.
