Types of Backyard Sheds
Shed KitsOur easy-to-build shed kits are designed to address all your backyard storage needs. Designed so the roof and walls quickly slot together, these sheds can be installed on either a wood or concrete base. Some models also feature snap-together assembly systems which can reduce your build time by up to 50%. A wide assortment of shapes and sizes are available to choose from including vertical storage sheds, horizontal storage sheds and storage boxes. Material choices include tough galvanized steel, rust-free resins and high-density polyethylene, and shatter-proof windows.
Barn Style ShedsDesigned to resemble a full-sized country barn, this unique shed style will add an attractive rural touch to your backyard or garden. The gambrel roof creates more upper space than other types of roofs which allows for easy storage of tall implements and other items. This makes it well suited for use as a garden shed or bike shed. Large double doors provide plenty of clearance for moving in bulky items like lawnmowers and outdoor furniture. Multiple sizes and siding options are available, and the stick framing allows for easy onsite construction.
Gable ShedsGable Sheds are extremely popular due to their classic look and versatile functionality. The peaked roof promotes good ventilation and provides a good amount of overhead storage space. It also allows snow and rain to slide off the sides and prevents ice dams from forming which can damage your roof. Ideal for use as a tool shed or general garden storage, this shed style is easy to build and maintain. Front entry, side entry and double entry options are available, with a wide variety of size and siding options to suit the layout of your backyard.
Salt Box ShedsThis small storage shed will look great in any backyard. The unique asymmetrical design features a short sloping roof in front and long sloping roof at the back. This provides an easy entry point and plenty of forward headroom. The 12’ x 8’ size makes it ideal for use as a potting shed, with room left over for storing garden tools and supplies. Our Salt Box Sheds include a window on either side to allow in natural light, and a steel door for added security.
Workspace ShedsIf you’re in need of extra workspace, look no further. Our Backyard Office Sheds provide plenty of room for a desk, file cabinets, office equipment and even extra seating. There’s also Backyard Studio Sheds which offer a great opportunity for uninterrupted painting, photography, music and other activities. And if you need more room for building projects, consider one of our Backyard Workshops. All Backyard Workspace Sheds include windows to allow in natural light. Insulation, drywall and rain goods packages are also available to make your workspace usable year-round.
She ShedsCreate your own secluded getaway with a She Shed! A great way to escape the noise and distractions of everyday life, a She Shed isn’t about any particular shed style or design. It’s about making a space for yourself. What you do with it and how you furnish it is entirely up to you. It can be a reading nook, a quiet spot for yoga, a small office or studio, or simply a private place to relax. Most of our Backyard Projects Sheds can work great as a She Shed. Look for models with multiple windows to allow plenty of natural light.
Man CavesThe in-house Man Cave has been around for decades, but a Man Cave Shed takes it to the next level. Truly a hideaway-for-him, you can deck it out any way you like. Foosball table? Great. Billiards? Even better! You can even install a flat screen and invite the gang over to watch the game. Loud cheering is encouraged because it won’t bother other family members in your home. Most of our Backyard Projects Sheds can work as a Man Cave. Make sure you choose a model with enough floor space to both recreate and relax.
Bunkie ShedsAdd extra living space to your home with a Backyard Bunkie. This purpose-designed shed is essentially a guest house, providing additional space for overnight visitors. It can also double as a getaway for mom or dad, or a convenient hangout for the kids. Multiple size and siding options are available, with even the smallest models providing enough space for a queen size bed or two doubles plus nightstands and a dresser. All of our Backyard Bunkie Sheds include large glass doors and side windows for natural light, with insulation, drywall and rain goods packages available for all-season use.
Shed/Playhouse CombosDo your storage needs include finding extra space to house the kids and their play activities? This configuration combines a storage shed AND a kids’ playhouse in one unique structure. Multiple Shed/Playhouse sizes and configurations are available to choose from, including some with a sandbox and raised play deck. All models include a separate, enclosed storage shed complete with dedicated side access door and side window for natural light. You’ll have plenty of room here for storing garden tools, equipment and other outdoor gear.
Planning Your Backyard ShedYou probably already have a rough idea of where you want your outdoor shed. Add clarity to this by sketching out your backyard with the shed in position. Is there enough space in that location to suit all your storage needs? If not try another spot, perhaps a corner. Consider the style of door you want and which direction it will face. Is there room enough to manoeuvre in larger items like a riding mower? If the doors swing out will they be impeded by a fence, tree or other obstruction? A shed with both front and side entry doors may be your best solution.
Permits & ApprovalsBe sure to consult all local building department and by-law requirements before purchasing your shed. You should also check with local utilities for any easements and underground service locations.
Now that you’re familiar with the various designs, features and building options that are available, you’re ready to start shopping for a shed! Whether you want a simple storage shed or full-size workshop, you’re sure to find a shed that meets your needs and fits your budget.
