Circular Saws

A circular saw is one of the handiest tools you can own. Sometimes just referred to as a skill saw, it can cut through wood, steel, plastic, tile and most other materials common to DIY home projects or contractor work. Unlike some other saws, a circular saw also allows you to make multiple kinds of cuts in wood. This includes simple crosscuts across the wood grain, rip cuts along the length of the board, and even bevel cuts when an angle is required. There are two basic design types to choose from to best suit your needs. Worm drive circular saws feature a motor that is mounted behind the blade. This makes for a narrower profile that’s easier to use in confined spaces. It also delivers more power than sidewinder models, which means it can make faster, deeper cuts even in more solid hardwoods. In a direct drive or sidewinder circular saw the motor is mounted to the side of the blade. There’s less torque and power, but it’s also lighter and more comfortable to use over the course of a day.

Corded and cordless models are both available. Cordless circular saws let you work virtually anywhere but remember to bring an extra battery pack or two. They're also smaller than most corded models and work well in tight spaces. Corded circular saws limit your mobility a bit, but they also deliver more power. Different circular saw blades are available for different applications. This includes high-speed steel blades, carbide-tipped blades, tile-cutting blades, and concrete blades.
