Unlike a permanent perimeter fence, a cross-fence is a temporary internal fence used to help manage livestock and pastures. Cross-fencing is an essential element of rotational grazing as it allows a large field to be divided into smaller paddocks. Livestock can graze one section of pasture for a short time and then be moved before it becomes over-grazed. This gives the first section time to regrow, leading to improved plant health and vigor. Polywire electric fencing is ideal for this practice as it is lightweight and easy to move from one location to another.
Cross-fencing is also useful for separating different types of livestock of pasture or keeping them out of temporarily sensitive areas.
