Here’s How:
To build the planter box, cut the 1x8x8 board into two 29”
lengths, two 4” lengths and one 27.5” length. Next, cut the 27.5” long board
down to 4” wide - this will act as the bottom of the planter. Loosely assemble
the pieces into a box form, then glue all the edges, clamp together and nail
with 1.5” brad nails. After the box has had time to dry, patch the nail holes
with wood filler, let dry and sand.
To build the frame that will hold the planter box, you’ll
first want to mill the 2x4 into two 1.5” square pieces. On a table saw, cut the
board down it’s middle then set your guide to 1.5” and trim off the rounded
edge of each piece. Cut those pieces down to four 24” lengths, two 22” lengths,
and four 5.5” lengths.
Using C clamps and a pocket hole jig, drill 2.5” pocket
holes on each end of one side of the 5.5” pieces. Start assembling the two sets
of legs; mark roughly 3.5” and 20.5” up from the bottom of each leg. Glue both
edges of the 5.5” pieces and clamp them in between the 24” legs at the marks
with the pocket holes facing down. Now screw the pieces together with 2.5”
pocket hole screws.
Again using C clamps and the pocket hole jig, drill 2.5”
pocket holes on the top of each leg that will face inwards. Glue the top edges
of each leg and place the 22” pieces across them, clamping and then screwing
together with 2.5” pocket hole screws.
Once the glue has dried, sand any rough joints in
preparation for staining. Pick your preferred combination of BeautiTone
Wood-Sheild solid or semi-transparent stains and apply two thin coats. Once
they’ve dried, set the planter box on the frame and sink a couple of screws
through the bottom of the box into the frame to attach.
Before filling your new planter with your favourite foilage,
to extend it’s life line the inside of the box with plastic to prevent the soil
from coming into direct contact with the wood.
