What is an HVLP paint sprayer?

HVLP stands for ‘high volume low pressure’, which is exactly what this type of sprayer delivers. HVLP paint sprayers use a large volume of air, then convert that air to a low-pressure spray. This results in less overspray and less wasted paint. HVLP sprayers are ideal for detailed paint work that requires accuracy and a smooth finish.

What is an airless paint sprayer?

An air sprayer, also called a pneumatic sprayer, requires an external stream of compressed air to mix and spray the paint. This is usually provided by an air compressor. An airless paint sprayer is self-contained as it uses an internal pump to pressurize the air and spray the paint. Airless paint sprayers are popular with novices and pros alike and are well-suited to jobs that don’t require precision work.

How do you thin paint for a paint sprayer?

Water-based paints are generally thinned to 70/30 ratio (70% paint, 30% water). This can be increased to an 80/20 ratio if the paint is a bit thinner. Oil-based paints need to be diluted with a paint thinner, usually at a 3-to-1 ratio (3 parts paint to one part thinner). However, not all oil-based paints can be thinned so check the product directions first.

How do you store an airless paint sprayer overnight?

Cleaning your paint sprayer every day may not be feasible if you’ll be painting all week. Here’s an overnight storage method that can save you time.

Leave the drain and suction tubes in the paint can.
Cover the can and hoses tightly with plastic wrap.
If the can is more than half empty put plastic wrap over the paint before covering the can.
Release all pressure from the sprayer
If you’re using water-based paint, leave the gun attached to the hose and submerge the gun in a pail of water
If you’re using oil-based paint, leave the gun attached to the hose and submerge the tip and guard in paint thinner.
Attach a plastic bag over the suction tube to prevent fluid from running out.
