Make the Look

Shopping List

• 1 x 3 pine (length will depend on tree sizes)
• sanding sponge 80 grit 1061-066
• sample paint cans mixed to your desired colours 1852-360/361/362

Tools

• mitre saw 1347-689
• brad nailer 1282-404
• brad nails 1283-987

Tree spine

• Cut 1 x 3 the desired height of your tree and taper the ends (see image for taper sample).

• Right side: Cut 1 x 3 pieces starting at 7” with a 90˚ angle on one end (centre of tree) and a 45˚ angle on the other end (outside edge). Cut additional 1 x 3 pieces 2” longer than the previous.
  
  
• Left side: Cut 1 x 3 pieces starting at 5” with a 90˚ angle on one end (centre of tree) and a 45˚ angle on the other end (outside edge). Cut additional pieces 2” longer than the previous.

Assembly

• Starting at the top of the spine piece, butt the branch pieces together so the V of the two pieces is in the centre of the support. Nail in place and continue assembling the branches down the tree.
  
  
• When the end of the spine is reached, draw a line square across the bottom and cut off excess. Cut a piece to brace the bottom of the back at a 90˚ angle.​
  
  

Finishing

• Paint the tree branches using alternate shades of green. Let the wood show through for a rustic look.
• Add an accent colour over top of each branch using a dry brush technique (wipe the paint from the brush onto a paper towel before applying to the surface).
• Once you’ve achieved your desired look, sand all edges of the tree with 80 grit sanding sponge.​
