Home renovations are like dominos, with one project leading to another, and then another. For us, it was the realization that our existing door and window just weren’t up to snuff with the new deck. After tackling those eyesores, the deck was ready to be lit up. I wasn’t keen on having wires and plugs everywhere, so I was thrilled to learn that Trex offers built-in lighting to suit all sorts of styles and spaces! Here’s our process for this final stage of the build.

New Laundry Room Window

The basement laundry room window was in pretty bad shape. The frame was chipped and the window rattled badly any time we had a big wind. The Home Installs team removed the old window and cut a larger opening for a new one. It took about two hours and the new window is way better! The inside sill is a bit deeper which is nice, and the outside look is just much cleaner looking. It does make me want to update the vinyl siding. Maybe next summer?

New Balcony Door

The old sliding door was grey, dingy and had a broken handle, so we opted to install a new one. We also changed the orientation of the slider from a right-hand to a left-hand opening. This gave us more space to place furniture on the upper deck and inside the dining room. Sometimes, just a small change like altering a doorway can vastly improve the flow of a room. So, if you’re thinking about an outdoor renovation, think about the other related elements that can be upgraded as well.

End Cap Lighting

Our Trex deck railing has small horizontal lights built into each end cap. It’s actually all one system that threads through the railing and is hardwired into our home’s electrical panel. We opted to have the lights turn on with a switch in the dining room. This entire deck looks stunning in the evening, but it’s also a safety feature that illuminates the stairs for nighttime usage. I can’t wait for early fall when the weather is crisp, and we can sit outside in the glow of the lights with a hot cup of tea or wine after the kids are in bed.

Stair Tread Lights

We also added small stair tread lights to complement the end cap lighting. They’re about two inches wide and blend into the stairs nicely. I like how they add a little extra twinkle to the stairs, and again, increase the safety factor at night.

Twinkle Lights

Remember how back in the planning post, I mentioned the under deck was going to be ‘my space’? Well, this gazebo net lighting was a me indulgence. We picked these lights up at our local Home Hardware and installed them on the underside of the deck with hooks. It took about 20 minutes, and the effect is a dreamy lounge area where I can escape from my workday for a calming lunch break or early morning coffee and meditation. They do have a plug, but we bought an adapter so I can just flick a switch from my office and the twinkle lights go on!
