Here’s How to Create a Shiplap Headboard

A headboard adds instant polish to a bedroom. And a headboard using shiplap brings charm and texture, too. Follow these simple DIY steps using this most affordable material and watch your bedroom be transformed.

Steps:

  1. Assemble all materials for project.

  2. Cut 2”x4”s to create a three-sided frame for your headboard.

  3. Cut each piece at 45-degree angles; this is called a miter joint, which is a simple way to deal with a corner compared to more complex constructions.

  4. Join the three-sided headboard frame pieces together with glue and screws.

  5. Position headboard frame on wall and drill/secure in place.

  6. Insert cut lengths of shiplap board into headboard frame, beginning at the top. Nail in place.

  7. Slide additional shiplap pieces into place within the frame, with the tongue and groove on each piece joining, until the frame is fully filled in, securing each board with screws as you go.

  8. Cut and attach cove moulding to the inside perimeter of the headboard frame.

  9. Fill in screw holes on frame with wood filler before painting.

  10. Paint entire headboard with BeautiTone paint.

  11. Enjoy your custom-made shiplap headboard!
