Hauling Home the Hardware – Simcoe Decks wins Big at NADRA Awards

Life as carpenter can take you down many different paths.  Michael Scott was one of those trained carpenters who decided to take one of those paths. As employee, Michael applied his trade by building custom homes and cottages in the famed Muskoka region of Ontario. Wanting to branch out on his own, Michael created his own deck building company (Simcoe Decks) and in a short 4 years, has become recognized as one of the top deck builders in North America.

The recent NADRA awards (North American Deck and Railing Association) illustrated just how far Michael has developed as a premier deck builder. Michael received a 2nd place for Alternative Deck under $25K and two, 3rd place finishes in the Refinished/Restored Deck and Deck Inlay categories, in a very competitive North American field.​

“It was great to be recognized with these honours.  I had some incredible clients that allowed me to become creative.  In fact, the one homeowner sold his cottage just before we were to begin the project and I thought he would cancel it.  He actually wanted me to speed it up so that they could enjoy the deck before it changed hands!”, exclaimed Michael.

Highlighting his showcase builds was the addition of Regal ideas’ Crystal Rail.  “Crystal Rail just blows away customers…it’s just so beautiful! It was my first time using it so I was a little nervous, but it was really easy to install. It’s a gorgeous product that my clients love.  The frameless system provides an unobstructed view and creates a wonderful ambiance in the evening when the LED’s are lit up” states Michael. “Using Crystal Rail has really helped elevate me as a premier builder…this project alone has spawned several other large decks, each representing well over 100K!”​
Simcoe Decks has transitioned its business model from all wooden decks to strictly using long lasting materials.  “When I first started deck building, we were only using pressure treated frame, substrates, and railings, but now my customers love the environmental responsible products I use, plus they are zero maintenance…that’s a huge selling feature!” states Michael. “We now use steel framing, composite for the deck boards, and Regal for all our railings.”
“What I love about Regal is that their systems are so seamless to put together. I’ve reduced my install time significantly from wood and other railing systems, plus I can charge more for it because it’s a premium product.  I’m also a member of their DeckStars program which is a network of deck builders like myself across North America who share ideas and grow from one another.  It’s been a terrific experience. It’s also why I switched our business to my local Home Hardware Building Centre because they were a stocking dealer.  As a contractor, you need the product when you need it and they’ve always been in a great in-stock position for me.”​
