Since 1992, when Tree Canada was founded, Home Hardware Dealer-Owners across Canada have been rolling up their sleeves to host Home Hardware Community Tree Plants on National Tree Day every September. Home Hardware Stores Limited and our independent Dealer-Owners are proud to support Tree Canada’s vision to improve the lives of Canadians by planting and nurturing trees, while teaching Canadians the value of trees.
Dealer Testimonials
Over the past 30 years, Home Hardware Dealer-Owners have planted more than 30,000 trees in communities across the country.
Home Hardware Community Tree Plants have been held at schools, playgrounds, seniors’ residences, community parks, conservation areas, and in spaces that require restoration following wildfires, tornados, and other weather-related events.
Here’s How our Dealer-Owners have been helping to beautify their communities and foster a greener environment:
Beach Builders Supplies Home Hardware Building Centre, Wasaga Beach, Ontario
My father worked with the Ministry of the Environment for over 25 years, so my passion for the environment started at a young age. One of my favourite parts of being involved in Home Hardware’s partnership with Tree Canada initiative for over 10 years is getting to pass my passion for planting trees down to the younger generations, including my son.
In 2015, with the help of Worsley Elementary School, we planted 50 fruit-bearing trees at Wasaga Sports Park – one of our biggest plants to date. We were inspired by the efforts of our local community garden that donates a lot of produce to the food bank and thought fresh fruit would be a great way to add to this donation. We have had the pleasure of watching these trees grow ever since, and it is forecast that next year could be the first harvest!
Harris Home Hardware, London, Ontario
We have been involved with the Tree Canada tree plant for the past 11 years. Local schools, community volunteers, and Reforest London have been instrumental in helping us with our annual tree plants. Reforest London does a great job of sourcing us sites that need trees the most – whether it be a flood plain, or a new park in need of some greenery!
One of the most important reasons we partner with Tree Canada is to give the next generation an opportunity to contribute to their community and discover a passion for the environment. In 2011, students from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Elementary School and local politicians helped us with our first tree plant at the new Plane Tree Park. Two young students in one of the groups had trouble getting their shovels in the ground. I offered to help them dig, and they said with determined voices, “No thanks, we will get this tree in!”.
Rockwell Home Hardware, Kentville, Nova Scotia
The Parks and Recreation Department in Kentville helped us choose the perfect location for our first plant: Oakdene Park. The town was reviving the park to create an improved space for our community. Staff, family members, town council, and even the mayor stopped by to help us plant. Today, the park is home to a zipline, soccer field, basketball court, playground, outdoor stage, pond, garden, and of course, our trees. These mature trees will provide shade and beauty in the park for many years.
One of our most memorable plants was just last year, at the Kentville Skate Park. It poured rain during our entire tree plant, so we were quite literally covered in mud from head to toe! We shared plenty of laughs and enjoyed each other’s company. These events give our staff a chance to connect outside of work, and these memories help our team spirit grow.
Watrous Home Hardware Building Centre, Watrous, Saskatchewan
We have been involved in the Tree Canada partnership since 2017. Local schools and organizations continuously partner with us to bring these tree plants to life. It is so special to see people of all ages working together to plant trees in our community for everyone to enjoy.
My wife and four of our grandchildren joined us for last year’s tree plant. We planted trees in Last Mountain Regional Park, right next to the boat launch where we spend a lot of time fishing. My grandkids loved being involved in planting the trees, although I think their favourite part was the community barbecue we held afterwards! Now, every time my grandkids go fishing there they can point to those trees by the lake and say, “I planted that tree”.
Windsor Home Hardware, Windsor, Nova Scotia
Working with Tree Canada has been the perfect opportunity for us to take further action on a cause that is already near and dear to our hearts here at Windsor Home Hardware. In the 1970’s, Dutch Elm disease destroyed many large old trees in our town. Since this devastation, our community has made tree planting initiatives a priority wherever possible. In 2015, myself and some team members formed a tree canopy restoration committee, with the goal of planting 1000 trees in Windsor.
Throughout the past five years, we have successfully planted over 650 trees and have created 10 new “mini parks” in town. Our partnership with Tree Canada has been essential in regreening our parks and public spaces, and restoring Windsor’s tree canopy to what it once was. The community is so grateful for the work we are doing, and we are excited to watch the growth and repair that will come from these tree plants in the years to come.
2022 Tree Plant Events
To mark the 30th anniversary of Home Hardware’s partnership with Tree Canada, 30 tree plants will be held across the country during the month of September.
