NEUTRAL HUES: Where to start? Forget flashy colours and patterns; Wabi-Sabi followers prefer the simplicity, harmony and softness of neutral colours, which give living spaces a peaceful, comforting atmosphere.
Favouring nature and its resources, Wabi-Sabi is fond of natural colours that have aged and changed with time. Neutral colours aren’t only pale and light. They can also be dark, like Ebony black. Rich in indigo reflections, ebony black outdoor paint gives older homes new life and enhances modern architecture.
Indoors, Ebony paint emphasizes irregular lines and shapes by contrasting with light neutral hues. It warms in contrast to Mandalay Road natural brown. And when set against Free Fallin’ white and the very pale blue Breathe, this trio of colours create a Zen-like harmony that is balanced and timeless.
RAW MATERIALS: Wabi-Sabi’s aesthetic is unrefined and imperfect, so it goes without saying that natural and raw materials, such as concrete, brick and stone, are favoured. Clay pottery, or terracotta, which is making a big comeback in current trends, is also featured.
As for textiles, natural is very “in”: linen drapery, rumpled cotton sheets and cushions made of wool or hemp, especially when made by hand.
IRREGULAR, ORGANIC SHAPES: You won’t find any geometric shapes or straight lines; Wabi-Sabi prefers irregular forms directly inspired by nature. Coincidentally, organic shapes are a very popular decor trend this year, making it easy to find beautiful accessories and objects in this style.
TIME-WORN OBJECTS: Mass-produced objects are switched for handmade—or better yet—vintage items. Far from a simple passing trend or encouragement to overconsume, Wabi-Sabi gives a second life to time-worn, sun-faded furniture. It also gives an opportunity to declutter your space and recycle objects you don’t really need. After all, the Wabi-Sabi philosophy advocates simplicity and modesty.
