Embrace a rich and rustic feel. Create textures that give your walls Victorian depth and character.
In a container, mix drywall compound with a small amount of paint. Apply this mixture to the wall using a wide trowel. Hold the trowel parallel to the wall and drag the drywall mixture over the surface of the wall. This application will create "pits and stones" and give the wall a heavy, textured appearance. (If you want to smooth out the surface a bit, drag the trowel back over the surface in all directions). Follow this procedure until all the walls have been treated. Let dry overnight.
To create a raised border detail, tape a stencil onto the wall and apply the drywall mixture over the stencil with the trowel. Continue the procedure around the wall until you have completed the border. Let dry overnight.
Lightly sand the entire wall, including the raised border, to remove any loose particles. Heavier sanding will produce a subtle, textured effect.
Base coat the entire wall in a low sheen paint in your choice of colour. For maximum effect, the paint should be a light colour. Let dry overnight.
Colour wash with a paint and glaze mixture (1 part paint to 2 parts glaze). The colour will be deposited into the cracks and crevices, enhancing the details on the wall. Continue rubbing the glaze mixture onto the wall until the entire surface has been treated. Let dry.
